Scales and Scales

I would call my day of learning a huge success. Practicing value scales with individual colors taught me a lot about mixing paint and using water. I also learned a great deal about the differences between alizarin crimson, cadmium red, and permanent rose.

The lizard is an experiment in mixing watercolor and watercolor pencils to suggest complicated textures and shifting colors. It isn't my favorite piece; but there are a lot of things going on that I really like. That eyeball is sufficiently creepy.

Trying out a challenge to myself - to create "finished" pieces with a limited color palette on a consistent schedule. I am still working out the final guidelines. I think I would like to challenge myself to use a new texture in each piece as well. I've had this unfinished sketch in my sketchbook forever. Even though I'm not entirely happy with it - it feels great to finally have it done!
