First Leaf

Fall is my favorite time of the year. I'm lucky to live in a place full of trees representing all the great colors of Autumn. I took a quick trip to the park and gathered a small collection of leaves to paint - this is my first one.

It took some time to figure out the best way to paint this, but I eventually found something that worked.I layered in some watery washes of color to fill the body of the leaf, then I dabbed more saturated color into the edges. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it took a couple tries.I considered adding a drop shadow, but I think it stands on its own.

Trying out a challenge to myself - to create "finished" pieces with a limited color palette on a consistent schedule. I am still working out the final guidelines. I think I would like to challenge myself to use a new texture in each piece as well. I've had this unfinished sketch in my sketchbook forever. Even though I'm not entirely happy with it - it feels great to finally have it done!
